Schuylkill prison roof cost rises

The cost of replacing the roof on the Schuylkill County prison increased slightly when commissioners approved a couple of changes in the work.

At the request of county engineer Lisa Mahal, commissioners on Wednesday approved the changes. They call for deleting 94 feet of flashing, at a cost reduction of $1,292.50, and installing a new roof drain at a cost of $3,322.56.The changes resulted in an additional $2,030.06, bringing the total cost to $407,005.06.The county in February hired Budget Renovations & Roofing of Shamokin to do the work for $404,975.The money to pay for the project is from the county's capital improvements fund, and with $159,600 of a $21 million 2012 bond issue.The prison, on Sanderson Street in Pottsville, was built in 1851. The roof was last replaced 28 years ago when the county built a small addition onto the stone prison.Mahal on Wednesday told commissioners the project is about 35 percent complete.Warden Eugene Berdanier on May 14 said he anticipated the work to be done in about three weeks.Also on Wednesday, commissioners approved Emergency Management coordinator Scott Krater's' request to extend to Oct. 31 a contract with Motorola Solutions.The work is to complete the county's 911 narrow banding project.Commissioners also opened bids for a Community Development Block Grant project in Frackville.Sikora Bros. Paving of Hunlock Creek, Luzerne County, offered a base bid of $91,075 and an alternate of $7,750; Dallago Backhoe Service, of Marlin, offered a base bid of $73,984.50 and an alternate of $6,224; M&J Excavation of Bloomsburg, Columbia County, offered a base bid of $74,788 and an alternate of $5,750; Schuylkill Paving of Schuylkill Haven offered a base bid of $88,175 and an alternate of $8,300.00; Arthur "Pat" Aungst of Pine Grove offered a base bid of $108,951 and an alternate of $10,260; and Patriots Construction of Hazleton offered a base bid of $50,560 and an alternate of $4,337.50.They also opened three bids for medical surgical supplies for the county nursing home at Rest Haven.JML Medical, of Lakewood, New Jersey, bid $90,421.16; McKesson Medical Surgical, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, bid $123,850.60; and Manheim Medical, of Manheim, Lancaster County, bid $39,920.04.Commissioners may award the contracts when they meet next Wednesday.
