Palmerton students receive Americanism Essay Awards

On Thursday, May 15, three students at St. John Neumann School, Palmerton received the Americanism Essay Award given by Oplinger-Hower American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 899, in Walnutport.

The auxiliary sponsored the Americanism Essay Contest for students from grades three through 12.One award in each of the classes was presented.This year the theme was "How Can I Show Pride in Being an American?"Class I comprises grades three and four; Class II is for grades five and six and Class III is for grades seven and eight.Winners this year are:• Class I, Sydney Stein; Class II, Caitlene Santos; and Class III, Nathan Cunfer.Each winner received a $25 gift card from Wal-Mart, plus an Americanism Medal.Cunfer also won Level III in the District Level. He will get another Wal-Mart gift card.The main objective of the American Legion Americanism Essay contest is to increase awareness and participation in youth activities that support proper respect and loyalty to our country.The contest allows for the opportunity to mentor children in local schools while promoting and recognizing outstanding achievement in patriotism and citizenship.It also encourages participants to learn about fundamental rights and freedoms we enjoy today.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS Nathan Cunfer was first in Class III of the American Legion Auxiliary Americanism Essay Contest. Caitlene Santos won in Class II and Sydney Stein was first in Class I. Ruth Porter was on the essay committee.
