Panther Valley School District sets kindergarten registration

Kindergarten registration in the Panther Valley School District will take place April 22, 23, and 24, between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., at the elementary school, 1 N. Mermon Ave., Nesquehoning.

For a child to be registered for kindergarten, the parent must call Panther Valley Elementary School and make an appointment. No walk-ins will be accepted.Parents should call Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 570-669-9411, ext. 2001, beginning the first week of April, and be prepared to provide the following: parents' names, address, and telephone number, along with the child's name and birth date.A child must be 5 years old before Oct. 1, 2014 to be eligible for kindergarten. There are no exceptions.When attending registration, the parent should have a state-issued birth certificate or other acceptable proof of name and age, along with immunization records for the child, as well as two proofs of residency.At the scheduled appointment, parents will meet with the school secretary who will record all pertinent family information, as well as determine the child's bus stop.The school nurse will record all medical information, review immunization requirements, and provide information on health related issues.Parents will then, as a group, meet with the PVES principal for a review of the school rules.Finally, parents will have the opportunity to meet the kindergarten teachers to discuss the kindergarten curriculum and related activities.While parents are in these meetings, children will receive auditory testing, a visual screening test and a readiness test.The entire orientation and testing program will take approximately 45 minutes.The time will help both parents and children feel more comfortable about beginning school, enable school personnel and families to become better acquainted, and make this new experience a special time for the children and their parents.
