Former bar sprucing up

A former bar will soon look a lot more like a residence, as Tamaqua's Historical and Architectural Review Commission met Monday and approved a plan to add windows to its first floor.

Three windows will be added to the first floor north wall of the former Tiki Bar, located at 20 E. Mauch Chunk Street. Last month, Tamaqua's Zoning Hearing Board granted variances that would help change the building's use from bar to residence, which is a goal of the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership. The partnership purchased the property from Edward Kashmer for $23,000 in October 2013. Its location puts it in a safety corridor identified by the Tamaqua Safety Initiative, which is part of TACP. The safety corridor runs south to north from Spruce and Center streets to Mauch Chunk Street, and includes the 100 blocks of Pine and Railroad streets. Its also within the borough's Historic District, which means that renovations must be approved by the Historical and Architectural Review Commission.HARC also approved a request from Sherry Dental, located at 41 W. Broad Street, to add a small projecting sign. The sign will be no larger than five square feet.
