Bears' Keefe wins quarterfinal stunner

BETHLEHEM It turned from a moment of glory to instant uncertainty. Brody Keefe was about to pull off the biggest upset of the Northeast Regional AAA tournament in Friday's quarterfinals against Jamal Powell of Northeast. Powell, who was undefeated at 28-0 and had earned one of the two byes in the the 160-pound weight class, found himself getting outsmarted by Keefe throughout their six minutes of battle, but drew even at 7-7 with three seconds left in the third period, scoring a takedown near the edge of the mat to send the bout of overtime.

Keefe's family screamed from the stands as he led 7-5, with the bout seemingly in his grasp and a trip to the semifinals almost locked in, and suddenly, a tied score heading into overtime gave Powell the advantage again. And the dream trip to the semis soon looked like a nightmare, as Powell went deep on Keefe's leg to gain an early advantage in the extra session. It appeared as if it was only a matter of time until the referee would signal a takedown to turn Keefe's wrestling world upside down, instead Powell's world flipped, as he suddenly found himself on his shoulder blades for a sudden pin at 6:27 to send Keefe and Pleasant Valley into a frenzy."I thought I had won the match in the third period and then he got that takedown with three seconds left," said Keefe, as Powell was actually given the two-point takedown at the buzzer. "I just stopped wrestling when I was up and that was my mistake. I was down on myself after that, but I found an opportunity in overtime."Keefe found a way for himself throughout the match, as he diffused three near takedowns by Powell in the first period to actually take a 2-0 lead into the second period, when he scored a takedown with 12 seconds left in the first. He then led 5-2 at the end of the second, scoring on the first of two reversals he would register against his opponent, with the second one giving him a 7-4 lead late in the third. Powell would escape and then score the tying takedown to even things at seven heading into the one minute overtime. That's when Powell looked like he would escape with a win, that was cruelly stolen from him by Keefe."He shot in on my leg and I had his leg hooked," said Keefe. "I decided to take a chance to turn him and it worked out. It was amazing."Pleasant Valley head coach Justin Micklos was equally ecstatic after witnessing the upset to help Keefe (29-12) set up a semifinal bout with District 2 champion Cody Cordes (39-2) of Wyoming Valley West."We just told Brody to wrestle his match and he wrestled hard the whole match," Micklos said. "We didn't want him to think about that guy being undefeated. We just wanted him to wrestle hard."Keefe noted that he wanted to be the one to give Powell his first loss of the season."I kept saying to myself, why not me?'" he said. "It was tough, but I'm happy to move on."It only gets tougher with Cordes, as he walloped his first two opponents with a fall in 57 seconds and a 10-1 major decision over Nazareth's Ricky Fornaciari in the quarters.Keefe posted an 8-0 major decision over West Scranton's Kyle Kroptavich to register his first regional victory of his career and then got his biggest over Powell. Now, he has to move forward."I just have to refocus for the semis," he said. "It's not going to get any easier."Teammate Ahmad Curtis (HWT) lost his opening bout of the tournament by a 2-1 decision to George Washington's Stephane Eugene. He'll try to continue his trek to Hershey in the second round of consolations Saturday morning.
