Carbon County creating criminal case database

Carbon County is spending nearly $44,000 to create an electronic database of criminal cases.

During the county commissioners' meeting on Thursday, the board approved the documentation for an electronic imaging project for the Carbon County Clerk of Courts office. The project costs include $30,330 for software installation, licensing, training and one-year maintenance as well as $12,963.80 for Dell and CDW-Gov quotes for hardware, software and applicable licensing. The total cost is $43,293.80.Commissioner Wayne Nothstein, chairman, said the project covers criminal cases in the clerk of courts office. The cases will be input into the Pennsylvania Criminal Management System, where it will be accessible to all counties.Nothstein said the project is expensive and will eventually be mandated by the state, so the county decided to start it now when funding is available.He said the county will get reimbursed for the project.Roberta Brewster, court administrator, said the project will begin with documents from this year moving forward.The completion date for the project is Aug. 1.In other matters, Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard is supporting a grant that the Carbon County Penn State Extension office is writing in regards to combating childhood obesity.He said Carbon County is the only county in the state with an obesity rate about 40 percent of the population.He sent a letter of support for the grant, and will sit on the advisory board.The commissioners also acted on the following items:• Approve the cancellation of the July 17 meeting of the board of commissioners and retirement board.• Reschedule the July 16 meeting of the Carbon County Prison Board to 10:30 a.m., July 9, at the courthouse annex.• Approve the recommendation from R. Michael Tirpak II, Carbon Engineering, to award the Carbon County Bridge 17 (covered bridge) open grid steel deck replacement and structural steel painting pro-ject to low bidder, Professional Construction Contractors Inc. of Bethlehem, at a cost of $291,126.• Terminate the agreement with Brad Konstas of Lehighton for maintenance of Josiah White Park, effective July 1.• Approve the termination agreement for medical services with St. Luke's Physician Group Inc. at the Carbon County Correctional Facility. This move begins the 90-day notice to terminate.• Approve the 2014 Workforce Investment Area financial agreement, commencing July 1, and terminating June 20, 2015, for employment and training and related administrative services between Carbon, who is the administrative entity, and Wayne County. The maximum payment shall not exceed $447,594.• Approve the hiring of Alyssa DeNardo of Lehighton as a county caseworker in the Children and Youth Services, effective July 7.• Approve the resignation of Ethan L. Gougher of Palmerton as seasonal park ranger I, Mauch Chunk Lake Park, effective June 16.• Approve the resignation of Wes M. Hurley of Jim Thorpe as summer laborer, Liquid Fuels Summer Program, effective June 23.• Approve an internship for Holly Marks of Lehighton in the prothonotary's office. The internship shall be from July 7 through Dec. 31.
