Lehighton gym gets $50K upgrade

Upgrades to its high school gymnasium will cost Lehighton Area School District over $50,000.

On an 8-0 measure, the school board on Monday approved the proposal from Miller Flooring Company Inc. in the amount of $51,181. Director Hal Resh was absent.The project will come out of the 2014-15 fiscal year through the Keystone Purchasing Network. It calls for upgrades to the high school gymnasium, scoreboards, sports lights and basketball backstop.Also on Monday, the board approved Barry Isett Associates to conduct a preliminary evaluation and develop bid specifications for the restoration/replacement of the high school lift pump station.In an unrelated matter, the board awarded the bid for food services to the Nutrition Group for a three-year term, with one-year reviews.After the meeting, Director Rocky Ahner noted that the district is saving about $20,000 from last year, and the manner in which the Nutrition Group serves fits the needs of the district's students.Ahner also noted that the employees of the district will be retained, and all employees will receive training on serving techniques and the new federal nutrition guidelines.
