Jim Thorpe Hall celebrates 25th year

The Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year with the induction of the class of 2014.

Three individuals and one team will comprise this year's class. The individual inductees are Ed Jordan, Ben Flizack and Craig J. Zurn. They will be joined by the 2007 Jim Thorpe High School football team.* Jordan was a 1966 Jim Thorpe High School graduate. He was an outstanding football player, leading the Carbon County area in scoring his senior season while playing running back for the Olympians. He also played baseball and basketball during his high school years.* Flizack was a 2007 Jim Thorpe High School graduate. A three-sport athlete, Flizack won four letters in tennis, two in basketball and one in football. Despite missing football his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons because of multiple knee surgeries, Flizack's outstanding senior season as a tight end/defensive end earned lots of college attention. He choose to play at Division I-AA Lehigh University.* Zurn was also a 2007 Jim Thorpe High School graduate. he was a four-year letterwinner in both football and baseball. He played on two Anthracite League championship teams during his Olympian football career. Following his senior season he became the first and only Jim Thorpe player ever selected to play in the Pennsylvania Football Coaches Association East/West All-Star Football game. Recruited by numerous Division I-AA football programs, Zurn lettered three years at Lehigh.* The 2007 Jim Thorpe High School football team finished 9-3 overall and captured the Anthracite League title with a 7-1 record. It is the only Olympian team in school history to win a District 11 playoff game, defeating Northern Lehigh in the opening round of the D-11/D-1 Class AA sub-regional.This year's banquet will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16 at Memorial Hall in Jim Thorpe. Tickets are available from any Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame committee member.
