It's police versus firefighters

A basketball game scheduled for Sunday in Lehighton "The Battle of the Badges" will be fun, but participants also agree it will be competitive.

It will be the Lehighton Area Police Department versus the Lehighton Fire Department.The event will be held at 7 p.m. in the middle school gymnasium. Proceeds benefit the Lehighton 150th anniversary celebration, planned for 2016.Courtney VanFossen, chairman of the 150th celebration committee, said preceding the game will be a basket raffle from 3-7 p.m.Anyone wishing to donate a basket can contact Brenda Koons, Lehighton borough secretary, at 610-377-4002.VanFossen said Lehighton's anniversary event will occur during the summer of 2016."As we did 50 years ago, the Lehighton 150 celebration committee would like to mark this occasion with a celebration. The sesquicentennial will be an opportunity for our community to come together ... bonded in a common goal of uplifting the spirit of Lehighton."She said this is the first fundraising event for the celebration."It will be a friendly basketball game," she said, noting that police officers from Lehighton, Franklin Township and Mahoning Township will be participating.She said there will be half-time festivities bringing community members onto the basketball floor to participate in half-court shots as well as children trying their hand at shooting the basketball.Emergency vehicles from both the police department and fire department will be on hand for photo opportunities.Matt Arner, a police officer in Lehighton, and Scott Nothstein, a member of the Lehighton Fire Department, joked with each other about "secret weapons" for the game.While Arner has a distinct height advantage over Nothstein, the fireman assured that he'll make up for this with speed.Also present at the event will be Tux the Penguin, the mascot of the Wilkes-Barre Penguins hockey team.Tickets for the event can be obtained at the Lehighton Municipal Building during regular business hours. Tickets also will be on sale at the door.Admission is a $5 donation with children under 6 admitted free.
