Schuylkill County gets top rating again

Schuylkill County is wise investment.

County financial director Paul E. Buber on Wednesday told commissioners that his office and county administrators recently participated in an extensive and comprehensive financial review with Standard & Poors rating services. The bottom line is that Schuylkill County has received a A+ bond rating for the third consecutive year, Buber said.He said Standard and Poor praised the county's leadership for their strong financial management and for avoiding speculative investments.Buber said the rating means the county is an attractive investment for institutional and individual investors who are seeking stable income and safety in the municipal bond market. In other matters, Commissioner Gary J. Hess asked his colleagues to send a letter to Gov. Tom Corbett to urge him to appoint a replacement for former Clerk of Courts Stephen Lukach.Lukach, who held the office for 27 years, is under investigation by the Office of the Attorney General, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and state police for alleged fiscal improprieties, including using court money for personal purchases. The investigations were launched due to irregularities found in his 2012 records by Controller Christy D. Joy's office in late March.Lukach retired April 22, faxing a letter to the governor. His first deputy, Paul Steffanic, has been serving in his stead. Steffanic wants to take the job officially. The Schuylkill County Democratic Committee on April 24 agreed to recommend Pottsville attorney Thomas J. Campion Jr. to serve the remaining time on Lukach's term. Hess' request was that commissioners support Campion's nomination and move quickly. Commissioner George F. Halcovage and Chairman Frank J. Staudenmeier agreed.
