Palmerton appoints school leaders

Palmerton Area School District has restructured its administrative team.

The school board, on a 7-0 vote on Tuesday, appointed Paula Husar as high school principal, at a salary of $91,670; Richard DeSocio, junior high school principal, $82,500; and Daniel Heaney, director of curriculum, instruction, and technology, $89,500.Directors Susan Debski and Charles Gildner were absent.Afterward, board President Tammy Recker congratulated the administrators."You guys are awesome," Recker said. "We love you."After the meeting, Superintendent Scot Engler said "the restructuring was a better way to meet the needs of the district."The action comes after the board in August 2013 approved a recommendation from Engler to reassign several administrators. At that time, the board reassigned Husar from principal of the junior high school to principal of the junior high/senior high schools, at the salary of $89,000; DeSocio, from dean of students for grades 7-12 to assistant principal of the junior high/senior high schools at the salary of $68,889; and Kathy Egan, from principal of the high school to assistant principal of the junior high/senior high schools, at the salary of $70,000.Before that reassignment, Husar had served as principal of the junior high school since June 18, 2012; DeSocio, as a guidance counselor at the high school for seven years; and Egan, as high school principal from 2000-2013.Asked after the meeting about Egan's status, Engler declined to comment because he said it was a personnel matter. In October 2013, the board named Heaney, director of technology, as acting director of curriculum and instruction.Engler said that consolidating the director of technology with acting director of curriculum and instruction has resulted in a "significant savings.""Mr. Heaney has done a great job getting us up to speed; it's a win-win across the board," Engler said. "We've taken great strides this year under Dan's leadership (in curriculum)."At that time, Heaney was slated to fill the position of acting director of curriculum and instruction until Sherrie Fenner, director of curriculum and instruction, returned from leave.Engler again declined to comment on Fenner's status because he said it was a personnel matter.
