Bowmanstown-Parryville Lions Club holds Charter Night

The Bowmanstown-Parryville Lions Club held its 38th annual Charter Night on June 2 at the Mahoning Valley Country Club.

President Raymond Nunemacher thanked the students who were to receive scholarships for being present. He said it takes a lot of work to earn the scholarships.The Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation provides money raised in Pennsylvania for the scholarships."Larry Engle donated $500 to the foundation and earned the name of Lion of Pennsylvania Fellow," said McElwee.Engle presented the awards, saying he is in school every day and sees how hard the students work. The plaques being awarded are made of slate, since it is a local product.Gabriel Scott of Palmerton High School was in National Honor Society, mock trial, student council, student forum, will be going to nationals with Future Business Leaders of America, works in the library as a tutor, volunteers with Family Promise and plays soccer. He will be attending Lehigh Carbon Community College. His parents are Robert and Kara.Peter Phelan of Lehighton High School played varsity soccer and tennis, was in the Science Olympiad, volunteers at Hawk Mountain, is in the drama club and is an Eagle Scout. He will be attending Lafayette College to study electrical engineering. His parents are John Phelan and Fenna Millen.Bridgette Miller, a Carbon Career and Technical Institute student from Palmerton, studied nursing. She is active in SkillsUSA and Students Against Destructive Decisions. She plans to go to Pennsylvania College of Technology to earn her registered nursing degree and will continue schooling until she receives her bachelor's degree.Her mother, Elizabeth Fronheiser, accompanied her. Her father is Kevin Fronheiser.Hailey Deibert is a CCTI student from Lehighton, where she studied cosmetology and has her license. She is part of the Hugh O'Brien Leadership group and SADD. Her mother, Deanna Deibert, accompanied her.District Gov. Lizanne McElwee said it is her honor to install the officers who have been elected.Officers for 2014-15 are Emma Moyer, president; Henry Altemose, first vice president and Lion tamer; Larry Engle, second vice president; Norman Engle, third vice president; Albina Engle, secretary; Heather Nunemacher, assistant secretary; Wayne Engle, treasurer; Earl Reabold, tail twister; and Burdell Steigerwalt, chaplain.Club President Ray Nunemacher presented a Bible to Barbara Moyer, whose husband, Oscar, passed away during the past year. He described the couple as kind and faithful Lions.Nunemacher said he had great support and wished good luck to incoming President Emma Moyer. He stressed that the secretary is the backbone of the club, not the president.Moyer said she would try her best but needs help from all the past presidents."Here I am. I'll try to make it," she said.McElwee stressed the need to get new members.
