Parryville plans playground facelift

Parryville Borough Council members met Monday evening to discuss upgrading the area park and a townwide cleanup.

The council passed a resolution to apply for a grant to give the park, located just off the Route 248 entrance to Parryville a much-needed facelift early this summer. Although a distinct price estimate for the project remains unknown, the grant will cover $60,000 of expenses. In order to receive the grant, 15 percent of the $60,000 must be raised in the next three years. The council said $4,000 is already available, leaving $5,000 to be collected. To avoid a tax hike, the borough plans to initiate a series of fundraisers, which could include a cake walk or Chinese auction.Currently, the park consists of two sets of swings and two seesaws.Possible playground equipment to be installed includes a complex intended for children age five to 12, complete with elements such as slides and monkey bars. The swings will remain a fixture, as long as toddler seats are installed.Handicap accessibility will also be required of the renovated park.Paved walkways leading to equipment will be installed to accommodate for disabled visitors.A revamped park will give residents of the small town and their children a safe place to spend their time while encouraging exercise at the same time.Jenn Emrey, borough council member and parent, feels that the current park leaves much to be desired."(My kids) ask me to go to the park a lot. And I always say, no there's nothing to do there. You're just going to get into trouble," Emrey said.Emrey's son, Ashton, 6, wants to see more kids at the park and would bring his friends there if a playground makeover would occur."They would love it there," the tyke said.An inspection team was scheduled to visit Parryville today to evaluate the condition of properties. If a property has aviolation, the owner will be issued a citationand have 20 days to fix whatever is wrong with the property. If the violation remains after the allotted time period, a second citation will be issued as wellas five additional days to correct it.If a third citation is issued, the property-owner will be fined.A community-wide cleanup week will be hosted in conjunction with the inspections. From June 14-22, a three-ton dumpster will be available at the borough building for residents looking to dispose of waste.Assistance will also be available for those needing addition help cleaning up their property. For more information, Parryville residents should be on the lookout for a flier containing all pertinent information.
