Palmerton Lions Club presents awards

They give and they give, and they give some more, never asking for anything in return.

This time, the shoe was on the other foot, as several members of the Palmerton Lions Club had recognition bestowed upon them.The accolades came during the organization's annual installation of officers, which was held recently at the Fireline Hotel in Palmerton.Vice District Gov. Sharon Kimmel was the installing officer.Robert Silliman is president. Vice president is Nick Hawkey, second vice president is Dolores Unangst and third vice president is Mildred "Millie" Hawkey.Michele Fredericks is secretary, Mark Green treasurer, Karen Green Lion Tailtwister, and Betty Silliman Lion Tamer.Nick Hawkey is membership chairman, Mark Green is program chairman, and the Rev. John Hazel is chaplain.George Unangst and Hazel are directors.Afterward, it was time for the presentation of a pair of distinguished awards.The Melvin Jones Award was presented to Mildred "Millie" Hawkey.Named for Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions Clubs International, the Melvin Jones Fellowship is largely due to the growth of the fellowship program that the Lions Clubs International Foundation has been able to meet humanitarian needs in communities around the world.Hawkey was chosen for all she does to promote Lionism, help her club and support her community.The Lion of the Year Award was presented to Ana Maria Melo.Melo was chosen by her peers to receive the award for all she does to support her club and community.
