In the lower end of Carbon County and among motorists in general, there was a universal sentiment that the State Highway Department should seize the Lehigh Canal at Weissport and dispose of the narrow, dangerous bridge at that busy traffic point. It is suggested that the water be turned off from the canal at the point where it passes the Lehigh River at Lehighton, stopping the flow of water into the canal and permitting its filling in at the Weissport crossing and disposing of the bridge. The public saw no good reason why this canal should be retained.
