Drug, alcohol cases heard

Drug and alcohol cases made up the bulk of last week's scheduled preliminary hearings before District Judge Stephen Bayer, Tamaqua.

One defendant had his case heard, two failed to appear and the rest all waived the charges to be heard in Schuylkill County Court.The no-shows were Karol Franzyshen, 21, of Coal Township, and Eric Brennan, 36, of Hazleton.Franzyshen was charged by Kline Township patrolman James Patterson in connection with an incident on Feb. 17. The charges include possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, driving without insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle, improper display of a license plate, driving unsafe equipment and driving with a suspended license.Brennan was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. The charges were filed by McAdoo patrolman William Curilla following a March 12 incident.The charges were all bound over to court, and warrants may be issued for both men's arrests.Candace E. Orfield, 29, of 155 Dietrich Ave., Hazleton, had charges of simple assault and harassment held for court following her hearing. The charges stem from a Dec. 15, 2013, incident and were filed by McAdoo patrolman Anthony Divirgilio.Orfield was released on her own recognizance.Jordan Jihad Saied, 20, of East Stroudsburg, waived charges of DUI of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving an unregistered vehicle and DUI of a metabolite. The charges were filed by McAdoo patrolman Curilla after a March 1 incident.Saied was released on his own recognizance.Cheryl Ann Toth, 46, of 22 N. Hancock St., Rear, McAdoo, was charged with DUI of alcohol (BAC 0.16 or higher), improper signaling, failure to stop at a stop sign, driving without rear lights and DUI of a controlled substance. The charges were filed by McAdoo patrolman Divirgilio after a Feb. 27 incident.Toth was released on her own recognizance.Shawn L. McGuire, 44, of 130 W. Centre St., Mahanoy City, will be in county court on charges of DUI, failure to use the required lights and improper signaling, filed by Tamaqua patrolman Joseph Krebs. The incident took place on Dec. 1, 2013.McGuire was released on his own recognizance.Justin Osman, 25, of Conyngham, faces DUI charges as well as failure to have rear lights. The charges were filed by McAdoo patrolman Curilla following a March 15 incident.Osman was released on his own recognizance.Arcedo Antonio Valdez, 18, of 128 S. Church St., Hazleton, faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The charges stem from a Feb. 21 incident and were filed by McAdoo patrolman Curilla.Valdez was released on his own recognizance.Vincent Morrissey, 21, of 307 W. Mountain Road, Allentown, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia by McAdoo patrolman Curilla. The charges were filed after a Dec. 21, 2013, incident.Morrissey was released on his own recognizance.Jeffrey Allen Fritch, 21, of Allentown, will have his charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia heard at the county level. The charges were filed by McAdoo patrolman Curilla after a Dec. 21, 2013, incident.Fritch was released on his own recognizance.
