Relay for Life

The Relay for Life for Tamaqua and surrounding communities will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St. The main topic for discussion will be the upcoming Power of Purple event.Organizers encourage all committee members, team captains and anyone interested in the fight against cancer to attend.School taxesThe Tamaqua Area School District is accepting Assessed Occupation Tax exemption applications for the 2014-2015 school year. This will cover the 2014 calendar year. This year's forms are orange.Retired persons and housewives with no earned income, who have previously been exempted, do not need to file again unless their status has changed and they are now earning income.Also, those who are disabled or at least 75 years of age, who have been specifically notified of their exemption by the district, need not file an application.Students who reach the age of 18 by June 30, 2014, will be responsible for paying the tax unless exempt by application.Requests for exemption must be filed with the district by March 1. Application forms are available at the school district administration building, local tax collectors' offices, the Tamaqua Public Library, Tamaqua Borough Hall, local post offices and all local bank branches.St. Peter's UnionSunday worship services are held at 9 a.m. in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. This Sunday's service will include Holy Communion. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.Also this Sunday, the Confirmation class will meet at 11:30 a.m., Daisies and Brownies meet at 6 p.m.Activities for next week will include: Monday, bell choir practice will be at 7 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 4:45 p.m., Cherub choir will meet at 6:30 p.m., junior choir practices at 7 p.m. and senior choir meets at 7:30 p.m.The church board will meet Feb. 9 at 10:45 a.m.St. John LutheranThe Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service Sunday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion. Sunday school and Confirmation classes meet at 10:30 a.m.Also on Sunday, rehearsal for new bell ringers will be held at 11:45 a.m.Next week's activities include: Monday, worship and music committee meets at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, angel choir rehearsal at 6 p.m., shepherd choir rehearses at 6:30 p.m., chancel choir rehearses at 7:30 p.m.Throat blessingsThe Feast of St. Blase will be celebrated in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Feb. 3. Father Linkchorst will bless throats following the 4 p.m. Mass on Monday, and after the 8 a.m. Mass on Tuesday.
