Ss. Peter and Paul celebrates Catholic Schools Week

Ss. Peter and Paul School of Lehighton, held an open house as part of Catholic Schools Week, with tours of the school and an opportunity for the students to show off their Academic Fair projects.

The theme of this year's academic fair was the History of Carbon County. Each student, whether working with their classmates on a team project or on an individual basis presented a display of events, businesses, people or historical attractions which contributed to the success of Carbon County.The students not only presented historical information, they also made models of several buildings and included a variety of displays to add a visual image to their projects."I am quite pleased with this year's projects," Principal Sherry Sernak said. "This year's projects focused on the history of Carbon County and they went above our expectations."One student made a loom to enhance her display how silk was made at the Baer Silk Mill, while another student visited the Old Jail Museum. There was a great display of all Beltzville State Park has to offer and several students did projects on the Lehigh Canal Park and Delaware and Lehigh Corridor Commission. One project included home made curtains which showcased the Harry Packer Mansion and there was also a display featuring the Mauch Chunk Opera House.There was also a series of displays on businesses, such as the history of Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Downtown Lehighton Past and Present, Nesquehoning High School, Fort Allen, Jim Thorpe Train Station and Brights. Individual chosen as topics were Asa Packer, Asa Lansford Foster, Josiah White, Col. Jacob Weiss, Jim Thorpe, John and Sallie LaRose, Tommy Dorsey, David Weatherly and Charles Schwab.Kindergarten students worked as a team to create a display of the Lenape Tribe that had live in the local area.Models of local buildings included the Old Jail, a coal breaker, Lehighton Police station, Marion Hose Co., Lehighton Fire Co., Nesquehoning Hose Company, Lowe's and the slopes of Blue Mountain Ski Area. There was also a display on the churches of Carbon County.
