Man charged after dragging police officer 15-20 yards

A Tamaqua Police Officer sustained minor injuries the day after Christmas as he attempted to question the driver of a white Jeep in connection with a suspicious activity report.

Patrolman Joseph Krebs was asked to be on the lookout for an older model white Jeep Cherokee that had been seen in the parking lot of the Tamaqua Family Practice on South Railroad Street. Officer Krebs received the report at 2:30 a.m. As he arrived on the scene, he saw the Jeep take off at a high rate of speed, entering the South Ward section of the borough.Patrolman Thomas Rodgers suspected the vehicle was on Anthracite Avenue and positioned his cruiser in the area of the Tamaqua Senior High School as Krebs headed west on Anthracite Avenue. Krebs found the Jeep parked in a cleared area above the alley, on property owned by the school district. Krebs approached the Jeep, making eye contact with the male driver, who he identified as Zachary Lawrence Kabana, 19, who has addresses in Tamaqua and Tuscarora. He also noted a female in the front passenger seat.Kabana abruptly put the vehicle in gear as Krebs was reaching for the driver's side door. As the officer opened the door, Kabana stepped on the gas, dragging the officer with him for about 15-20 yards. As the Jeep gained speed, Krebs was struck by branches and dragged over rocks until he was able to get free.Kabana was able to get away, but was picked up on Dec. 30 and arraigned before District Judge Steven Bayer, who set bail at $10,000 percentage.
