A familiar face returned to the Mahoning Township board of supervisors Monday as well as a newly elected supervisor, as the township held its reorganizational meeting.

The general election last fall saw both township Chairman John Wieczorek and newcomer Shawn Haggerty elected to the board. Joining them for her first full year as a supervisor was Kerry Verrastro, who was appointed late last year to a vacant seat, caused by the untimely death of Supervisor Linda Benner.

The biggest surprise of the reorganizational meeting was the appointment of a new township engineering firm, LTL Consultants of Oley. The board voted 4-1 to appoint the new engineer with Wieczorek opposed, while Supervisors Haggerty, Verrastro, Bruce Steigerwalt and Franklin Ruch supported the new appointment.

Previous engineer T&M Associates was appointed in 2009 after Carbon Engineering asked to be excused from the Packerton Yards project since it was acting on behalf of the Carbon County commissioners. T&M was chosen to act on behalf of the township for that project, but then in 2009, the board released Carbon Engineering altogether and appointed T&M as its official engineer.

In the last few years, especially with the building project, Supervisors Ruch and Steigerwalt, who were overseeing the construction of the township garage, questioned the activities and numerous invoices from the engineering firm. On more than one occasion as well, supervisors questioned certain project reviews and the invoices associated with them. In all the cases, the questions seemed to be resolved without issues.

In other appointments, Wieczorek was returned to the board for another term as chairman while, Ruch was once again appointed vice chairman by unanimous votes. Solicitor Tom Nanovic was retained as were secretary treasurer Natalie Haggerty and zoning officer LeRoy Leibenguth, as well as all the other township appointed officials.
