A Schuylkill County driver was killed in a one-vehicle crash along Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township. The crash occurred about 11:55 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, according to state police at Frackville.
Troopers said Ralph Milton Rumbel Jr., 53, of Ringtown, was driving a 1998 Buick LeSabre southbound when his vehicle drifted onto the left shoulder and collided with a rock embankment.
The vehicle flipped onto its roof with Rumbel ejected. He was found in the left lane of travel.
Rumbel was pronounced dead at the scene by county deputy coroner David Truskowsky of Mahanoy City. He died of massive cranial cerebral injuries, troopers said. Troopers said speed was not a factor and the road was not snow-covered at the time. Further tests will be conducted by the coroner's office to determine if alcohol or controlled substances were present in Rumbel's system, troopers added.
