Schuylkill man faces theft counts

A Schuylkill County man, already in the county prison on theft by deception and related charges in two pending cases, is facing still more counts in similar incidents.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Robert D. Schappell Jr., 42, of Lake Front Drive, Deer Lake, has been charged in three more cases. The new charges include theft of motor vehicles, and two counts of theft by deception.Troopers have charged Schappell in connection with taking over $35,000 from two individuals and vehicles from a third.Troopers said Schappell told Jonathan Bowers, 33, of Cumbola, of Bowers Motorcycles Sales, located at N. Valley St., New Philadelphia, that he would be able to get the victim all terrain vehicles, motorcycles, motorcycle parts, etc., at wholesale prices. Bowers gave Schappell a total of $20,700 for the vehicles and parts. Schappell never delivered the items promised because they never existed, troopers said. The incident occurred between Dec. 26 and 31, 2013.In the second case Schappell told David Wetzel, 63, of Long Run Road, Schuylkill Haven, that he would be able to get him 10 vintage vehicles at discounted prices from a car dealer that he deals with in vintage vehicles. Wetzel gave the defendant $15,400 for the vehicles. Schappell never delivered the vehicles because then never existed. This incident occurred during the time frame of April 20 and July 20, 2013.In the third case James Hurley, 49, of Philadelphia, of Hurley Auto Sales, 3005 Ford Road, Bristol, Bucks County, gave Schappell 12 flood vehicles which he had purchased at various auctions. In the past Schappell had fixed the electronics in the 12 vehicles and detailed them that were damaged in floods for the victim. In this case, troopers said, Schappell took the 12 vehicles and never returned them to Hurley. The defendant sold the vehicles to local businesses as payment for debts This incident occurred during the time frame of July 1, 2013, and Feb. 7.Schappell was arraigned at the county prison on the new charges by District Judge James Ferrier, of Orwigsburg. Bail was set at $50,000 straight cash on each count. Schappell remains in the county prison.The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation.
