Country club history

A timeline of the former Blue Ridge Country Club in Palmerton, which was sold over the weekend to Blue Ridge LLC:

Founded by the New Jersey Zinc Company, BRCC was established in 1915. From there, a farmhouse was rented, and the first nine holes were laid out as the club started with 52 active members. In 1928, the club purchased 138 acres of land from the Palmer Land Company. In 1958, the club purchased 169 acres from the New Jersey Zinc Company.Around 1957-58, the old farmhouse was renovated. In 1986, a fire damaged much of the forestland surrounding the golf course. Later that year, it was decided to spend $40,000 to start clearing and grading the fairways. In 1987, nine additional holes were constructed, to take it to its 18-hole setup. That project was completed in 1990, and cost about $600,000.In 2003, a new, $2.5 million clubhouse was constructed overlooking the golf course and the Blue Ridge mountainside. In September 2013, then BRCC general manager John Rehus said that the member-owned club did not plan to shut its doors any time soon; that it planned to celebrate its 100th birthday in two years; and that it planned to remain in operation for many years to come.In October, the club's executive committee announced that a "deed in lieu" had been signed, and as of Nov. 30, First Northern Bank and Trust Co., Palmerton, took over the property.• Due to a decline in membership, the restaurant closed Nov. 17 and the club closed its doors on Nov. 27.• The course and all property at Blue Ridge Country Club was closed to everyone on Dec. 1, 2013.• New owners will call the club Blue Shamrock.
