A Tamaqua couple was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Wednesday afternoon along a slush-covered Route 309 in Lynn Township, Lehigh County.
State police at Fogelsville identified the couple as Roger D. Jones, 52, and Geraldine M. Jones, 58. The two were pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:30 p.m. crash by Lehigh Country deputy coroner Craig Hanzl.
County coroner Scott M. Grim said both died of multiple blunt force trauma. He ruled the deaths were accidental.
Troopers said the crash occurred when Jones was traveling northbound, a half-mile south of Gun Club Road, operating a 2004 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck.
Troopers said Jones lost control on the slush covered road with his pickup truck entering the southbound lane. After entering the southbound lane the front end portion of a 2012 Ford E350 van, driven by Matthew T. Amey, 29, of Allentown, struck the passenger side midportion of the pickup truck.
Following initial impact, troopers said, the pickup truck came to rest facing west, partially in the southbound lane, near the west shoulder. The van came to rest facing south partially in the southbound lane, near the west shoulder.
Troopers said Amey was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, by Northwestern ambulance for treatment of a minor injury.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by volunteers from the Germansville, New Tripoli, and Lynnport fire companies, and Northwestern ambulance personnel.
