High school obtains drug grant

Palmerton Area School Board directors accepted a grant of $1,000 at its meeting Tuesday evening.

The Communities in Schools Pennsylvania grant will be used for a student involvement drug free program for high school students for the current school year.In other business the board:Accepted a Special Education performance grant for School-Based Behavioral Health: PBIS Model Sites for S.S. Palmer Elementary and Parkside Education Center for a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $2,000 for the 2013-14 fiscal year.Approved Diane Andrews, cafeteria; Terri-Jean Walck, instructional assistant; and Samantha Gillen, custodian, as day-to-day substitute support staff, effective Jan. 22.Approved January Ladd as a cafeteria worker, assigned to the junior/senior high school, for four hours per day, at a rate of $10.95 an hour, effective Jan. 22.Approved Shelby Haydt as a cafeteria worker, assigned to the junior/senior high school, for four hours per day, at a rate of $10.95 an hour, effective Jan. 22.Appointed Holly Sell as mentor teacher for Shanna Israel, for the second semester of the 2013-14 school year.Approved the retirement of Darlene Trovitch, learning support teacher at Towamensing Elementary School, effective at the end of the 2013-14 school year.Approved Kristen Tubbs as a contracted learning support teacher, assigned to S.S. Palmer Elementary/Parkside Education Center, start date to be determined at Masters Step 1, $39,902, pending contract negotiations.Approved Krystle Megilo, elementary K-6, and Lauren Siegelski, Pk-4, Special Ed PK-8, as day-to-day substitute teachers, effective Feb. 5, 2014.Approved Debra Demyanovich to attend the PA Association of School Personnel, Feb. 26-28, in Hershey, at the cost to the district of $747.Approved the transfer of Janelle Scheckler from one-to-one instructional assistant at S.S. Palmer Elementary to Title I instructional assistant at S.S. Palmer/Parkside Education Center, effective Jan. 21, at the rate of $13.05 an hour, for up to six hours per day, but not more than 29.5 hours per week, pending contract negotiations.Approved Felicia Strauch as a one-to-one instructional assistant at S.S. Palmer Elementary, effective Jan. 21, at the new hire rate of $13.05 an hour, for up to six hours per day, but not more than 29.5 hours per week, pending contract negotiations.Approved Marcia Heinick, Joseph Plechavy, and Krista Campbell as volunteers at Towamensing Elementary School for the 2014 spring music program.Approved Dawn Burke as winter program facilitator of the PLATO course/ credit recovery program for students in grades 7-12. The program will run March 3 to about March 28, Monday through Thursday, after school. The pay rate is $28 an hour, in accordance with the current contract.Approved the National Junior Honor Society's field trip to the American Museum of Natural History, in New York City on May 14, at a cost to the district of one substitute teacher.Approved IRS Notice 2013-71, for Palmerton Area School District, Section 125, flexible spending account, to permit a carry-over to the next plan year up to $500 of unused participant account balances, effective with the school year of 2013-14.Approved a resolution appointing the business manager with the duties and implementation of Post-Issuance Compliance Procedures.Accepted the first reading of policy #620, fund balance revision, to be in compliance with GASB #54 per independent auditor.Appointed newly elected Lisa Nemeth as tax collector for Palmerton borough for school district tax year 2014.
