Tamaqua seniors

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met Jan. 30 with 60 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session. Jacque Patrick provided the invocation "Leave It To the Lord."Reports were offered by secretary Ruth Ann Feane and treasurer Penny Schlorf. Rose Eick was added to the sick list and new member Gregg Barron was given a warm welcomeA Valentine's Day party will be held during the Feb 13 meeting. The day will include the crowning of a king and queen, cake and ice cream. A bus trip to Philadelphia is being planned for May 27 and will include a Spirit of 76 boat ride. For more information, contact Eleanor at 570-668-1509.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, on Route 54 (East) in Hometown. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.Veterans helpA representative from the Disabled American Veterans will be available once a month at Tamaqua Borough Hall to offer free veteran's claim service for veterans as well as widows and dependent children of veterans. Information and assistance will be provided for service connected disability claims, low income pension, health care claims for service connected disabilities and low income veterans and other questions concerning veterans' benefits.The representative will be at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will observe First Friday this week with confessions at 7:30 a.m., followed by Mass and devotions at 8 a.m. Communion calls will begin at 9 a.m., with the exception of parishioners in the Tamaqua ABC Hi Rise, Coaldale and Hometown. Communion calls were made to those areas Thursday morning.The parish Holy Name Society will meet at 8 p.m. Thursday. The meeting will be preceded by a special Mass, beginning at 7:30 p.m.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. A contemporary service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Tamaqua YMCA, including nursery and primary church. Sunday school classes, for all ages, will meet at 9:15 a.m. at the church.Also this Sunday, the monthly service at the Tamaqua ABC High Rise will be celebrated at 6 p.m.Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m., TYM staff meeting at 8 p.m.; Saturday, musician rehearsal at 8:30 a.m., praise practice at 9 a.m.
