PA Turnpike operating under weather emergency conditions

Pennsylvania Turnpike is operating under a Winter Weather Emergency with reduced speeds at 45 miles-per hours due to existing roadway conditions with poor visibility. Areas of snow covered roadways are being treated. All travelers are urged to reduce their speeds and keep alert for quickly changing weather conditions. The potential for snow and icing conditions exists and motorists should keep alert for quickly changing weather conditions and reduced visibility.

Anticipate slow or stopped traffic in your lane of travel, and watch for emergency crews working on the roadway. Remove all snow and ice from vehicles before hitting the highway and turn on the headlights anytime the windshield wipers are in use.Turnpike maintenance crews, State Farm Safety Patrols, and the Pennsylvania State Police are increasing forces to assist stranded motorists, keep traffic moving and respond to emergencies. All abandoned vehicles are being removed from the Turnpike at this time.In case of an accident, breakdown or other emergency, motorists can utilize the yellow emergency call boxes on the shoulder or dial *11 or 1-800-332-3880 to receive aid. Be prepared to give your milepost location and direction of travel and move the involved vehicles out of active travel lanes if possible.The Turnpike Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) will be activated and motorists can turn to 1640 AM for traffic and emergency roadway updates. Changeable message signs have been activated to provide updated information regarding possible delays and closures.The Turnpike's Traffic Operations Center will continue to monitor the weather across the system. If conditions improve, the restrictions will be lifted at the suitable time.Officials advise motorists headed for the Turnpike to check out conditions before they leave.
