Baby had brain injury

A 1-year-old Schuylkill County baby found dead in her crib on Dec. 27 had bleeding inside her skull, said coroner David Moylan.

The girl, born in November 2013, was found in her crib by her mother at 10 p.m. in a house at 9 W. Centre St., Ashland, according to a news release from trooper Edward Lizewski of the state police barracks at Frackville.Police have not released the identity of the baby's parents.Moylan on Tuesday said the mother was at work and her boyfriend was at home with the baby and at least one other child when the baby died.Moylan conducted a virtual autopsy, noninvasive examination involving computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging to obtain a detailed view of a body. The virtual autopsy, performed on Sunday at Moylan's Simon Kramer Institute in New Philadelphia, revealed evidence of bleeding within the skull cavity, around the brain, Moylan said.A traditional autopsy was performed Monday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township, by Dr. Barbara Bollinger. The preliminary results confirmed bleeding into the baby's central nervous system, Moylan said. The final results of that examination, which are expected to provide information to determine the cause and manner of the baby's death, are expected to take at least a couple of weeks, he said.Efforts to reach District Attorney Christine Holman were unsuccessful early Tuesday. In addition to state police, the Schuylkill County Detective's office, Ashland police, and the county Children and Youth Services agency are also investigating the baby's death.
