Man celebrates 100th birthday

On his 100th birthday party Sunday, lifelong Nesquehoning resident Joseph Andrew Puschock was smiling with the enthusiasm of a 21-year-old.

"He still likes to joke around," said Patricia Richie Puschock, his daughter-in-law.It didn't take long for Joseph's comedic side to come out.Sensing it was time for pictures to commemorate the occasion, Puschock grabbed the bottle of Schloss Biebrich Sekt sparkling wine in front of him, hoisted it high and smiled.Puschock celebrated with numerous members of his family at his East Catawissa Street residence, complete with the beverage and a cake.He was born in Nesquehoning on Dec. 21, 1914, to Mary Warholick and Andrew Puschock. Joseph was one of 11 children in the family, including three sets of twins. His siblings include five brothers, Michael, Wash, John, George and Andrew Jr.; and five sisters, Mary, Anna, Eva, Esther and Helen, his twin.After graduating from Nesquehoning High School, Joseph married Julia "Jane" Merman on May 5, 1940. He worked as a clerk for the former Jersey Central Railroad.Flying was a passion of the Puschock boys. Joseph had his pilot's license and his brother Andrew was killed over England during World War II while serving as a pilot with the Air Force.Joseph and Julia had one son, Thomas A. Puschock, who passed away Nov. 21, 2011. Among Joseph's passions was watching baseball with Thomas.He also enjoys trains, Nascar and football."He loves watching sports, especially when the Yankees are playing," members of his family noted. "Today, he still enjoys doing the daily crossword puzzle."
