Quick start propels Northern Lehigh

Wrestling their third dual match in four days, it wouldn't have been surprising if Northern Lehigh looked somewhat lethargic against Lehighton last night.

The same concern could have been raised for the Indians, who were coming off a tough loss to North Schuylkill less than 24 hours earlier. But it was the Bulldogs that quickly dismissed any notion of a slow start, racing out to an early lead on their way to a 42-20 non-league win."First of all, we're always happy with a win," said Northern Lehigh head coach Steve Hluschak. "It doesn't matter if we win by one or 22, like we did tonight. Either way, a win's a win."Coming into tonight, we knew we were going to have to wrestle well and some things were going to need to go our way, and obviously they did in a few of those matches, as some things did for them as well. But that's going to happen in a match like this."After dispatching Colonial League foes Palmerton (Monday) and Southern Lehigh (Wednesday), Northern Lehigh (4-0, 3-0) seemed to be able to use the momentum of those victories, claiming the first three bouts of the evening for a quick 15-0 lead. The second of those matches was a Nate Farber 1-0 decision over Tyler Cann at 160 pounds, with the former earning the victory on an escape in the third period. After facing Farber multiple times last season, Lehighton (1-2, 0-1) head coach Danny Williams thought his junior had the plan necessary to come out on top in their first meeting this year."Tyler battled until the end and was in on four or five good shots; he was so close to finishing him," Williams said. "But that's something we can fix, and that gives you confidence moving forward because we know we can work on that and fix that. Hopefully, we can come back and the outcome will be a little different the next time."One wrestler who was able to bounce back from an earlier loss was Northern Lehigh's Seth Fronheiser, who scored in the third period after trailing 2-0 to decision Nate Kemmerer 3-2 at 106 pounds, a victory that pushed the Bulldogs' lead to 21-9 after eight bouts. After getting pinned by Kemmerer just a few weeks ago at the Bullet Invitational, Fronheiser was happy to turn the tables on his fellow freshman this time around."I was really worried. I was just trying to get off the bottom and keep the score close so I could maybe get a takedown, tie it up and maybe go to overtime," Fronheiser explained. "But he tried to tilt me and I came out on top, got the two (points) and got the win."The performance impressed Hluschak."It was a hell of a turnaround," the coach said. "Seth's going to continue to get better and get stronger, and hopefully he can build on this win and can gain some confidence from it.Northern Lehigh also took advantage of several convincing wins, scoring bonus points in six bouts, highlighted by Ezra Neff (120), Ryan Farber (145), CJ Young (152) and Chad Cederberg (170) pins.Aside from Zachary Kemmerer (126) and Connor Frey (195) forfeit victories, the Indians also saw Tegan Durishin (138) and Wyatt Clements (220) triumph.Clements, in his first year of varsity wrestling, fought off a Stephan Scheib rally to hold on for a 5-3 decision."With Wyatt being new to the sport, what he is right now is a battler," said Williams. "He's the type of kid that just doesn't want to lose and he's going to do everything he can to make sure that doesn't happen."He already has the mentality that he'll do anything to win, and once he gets more acclimated to the sport, that'll be a winning combination."With Northern Lehigh looking to get several key wrestlers back in the near future, Hluschak is hoping the influx will prove to be a recipe for success."We have some guys banged up and that's why we had to forfeit a few matches tonight," he said. "So we're definitely not at full strength. But obviously, anytime we can get a win, like we did tonight against a quality, well-coached team when we're not at full strength, we're going to come out of here happy."No. Lehigh 42, Lehighton 20106 - Seth Fronheiser (NL) dec.
