A 10-year-old Jim Thorpe boy will never forget the harrowing experience that brought him dangerously close to being swept down Mauch Chunk Creek. The boy was trying to retrieve a soccer ball when he fell into the swirling water.

Fortunately, several men from the Phoenix Hose Company were in the area, and Robert Strohl, an employee of the Mauch Chunk Trust Company, was able to pull him to safety.
