Concourse Club seeks artists, photographers

The Concourse Club of Palmerton is accepting entries in its Annual Palmerton Community Festival Art and Photography Show.

The event coincides with the festival which is Sept. 5-7. The Art and Photography Show will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 6 and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 7 at St. John Neumann School, Third and Lafayette Avenue in Palmerton.There are category divisions for youth and adults which include all media paintings and black/white and color photographs.Best of Show, People's Choice, First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention winners will be chosen with a variety of prizes for the winners.There is a pre-registration fee of $5 per entry. It is $6 if you enter the day of the show. Three entries per person are allowed.Those who wish to exhibit their work, or to learn more, can contact one of the art show co-chairs: Diane Huber at 610-681-7217 or Chris Eckhart, 610-826-3176.The adult art judges will be Susan Ford and Cindy Gunn.Ford is a retired art teacher from the Allentown School District. She taught art in grades K-sixth grade in nine different schools for more than 35 years. Today, she works part-time for Curriculum Travel America as a tour guide for school groups in Washington, D.C.Gunn retired from the Allentown School District after 33 years as an elementary art teacher. She also spent may years teaching part-time at the Allentown Art Museum and Muhlenberg College. She enjoys collage and mixed media. Her other interests include gardening and backyard birding.The student art judge will be Earlene Russell, who is a third generation artist specializing in watercolor. She taught art and art appreciation in grades K-12 at Corner Stone Christian Academy in Randolph, New Jersey, before relocating to Pennsylvania in 1986. A member of The Carbon County Art League, she has participated in several art shows in Pennsylvania and Maine.Her painting of a night sky entitled "Over Above and Beyond" was featured on The College of the Atlantic website in 2009. In a solo show in 2010, 13 of her paintings were on exhibit for two months at the Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor, Maine. In 2012, 17 paintings were juried and selected for a monthlong exhibit at Stonehedge Gardens in Tamaqua.Although she enjoys working in oils, she found her calling with watercolor. Among her paintings are landscapes of Acadia National Park, Yellowstone National Park, The Grand Tetons and Pennsylvania's countryside.The student, adult photography, and mixed media judge will be Lynn Shupp. She has attended the Art Institute in Philadelphia and has her own photography shop in Palmerton.Raffle prizes will be awarded Sunday: An acrylic painting titled "Soft Sky" by Deborah Walkowiak valued at $200, donated by Kathy Duarte; a vintage floral oil painting by Queenie Stein donated by the Rev. Doris Bray; three wall hangings donated by Mary Brigham and Bob Hess (a Christmas one valued at $75, a quilted Fall Leaves valued at $50, class quilted embroidered one valued at $75); a "Willows" music box valued at $50, donated by The Owl's Nest, located in the Palmerton Campus of the Blue Mountain Health System.An Artist Bargain Corner will also be featured at the show, where local artists will display their works for sale. The cost of the painting or artwork will be less than $150.The Concourse Club meets from October through May at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month.For more information email the club at
