Two shoplifters sentenced Thursday

Two shoplifters were sentenced in Carbon County court on Thursday by Judge Joseph J. Matika, one getting a jail term and the other probation.

Barry Allen Frantz, 45, of Blakeslee, was sentenced to serve one day less 12 to one day less 24 months in the county prison on one count of retail theft, a felony. The jail term will be followed by two years of probation.Frantz was arrested by Mahoning Township police for an incident at the Walmart store on Dec. 20, 2013. He took merchandise valued at over $1,600.Frantz read a written statement in which he said his problems with the law were tied to a drug addiction problem. He said he has been enrolled in a drug program in the Monroe County prison, where he is currently an inmate.Frantz recently was sentenced in Monroe for retail theft to serve 11 1/2 to 23 months in prison.Matika also ordered Frantz to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, render 100 hours of community service when released on parole, supply a DNA sample, stay out of the Walmart store in Mahoning, and make restitution of $1,630 to the store.Matika ruled the sentence would run concurrent with the Monroe County term meaning Frantz will serve about seven more months beyond the 11 1/2 minimum he now is serving.Nikki M. Rehrig, 53, of Lehighton, was placed on probation for two years on a charge of retail theft. It is her sixth conviction, and fourth one rated as a felony.Although spared jail time yesterday, Rehrig was on probation for a prior retail theft charge at the time of the incident and is facing a probation revocation hearing.Defense Attorney Gregory Lee Mousseau said Rehrig is facing a six month prison term for the violation when her hearing is held.Rehrig told Matika she has had mental health issues for several years and has seen numerous doctors in trying to get help for her problems. She told the court she feels her current doctor has finally helped her. She also said she does not go shopping alone anymore to ensure she does not shoplift again. She also told Matika she successfully completed a counseling program for shoplifters in Lehigh County. She said that program has helped her see the harm she has caused and helped her with her problem. When asked by Matika why she continued to steal even after being caught so many times, she said, "Because of the thrill of it."Matika said he was considering a jail term but decided against it because of the Lehigh County program she completed. In addition to the jail term, Rehrig was ordered to supply a DNA sample, continue mental health treatment, and stay out of the Walmart store in Mahoning. Both defendants must also pay court costs, which average about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
