Polk approves VALOR Clinic

The Polk Township supervisors held a public hearing Wednesday for the conditional use application from VALOR Clinic, 1130 Scenic Drive in Kunkletown, formerly the Jonas Hotel.

Veterans using the facility are from Monroe County, with a few from Lehigh and Carbon counties. The clinic's intent is to help homeless veterans transition into society by developing resume writing, checkbook balancing, computer and interview skills with the use of counselors and seminars.The facility will house 13 overnight veterans in the same rooms that the Jonas Hotel used for housing. Changes to the first floor include an activities center, classroom and dining area for 24. The program is 90-120 days. Veterans with a substance abuse problem must successfully complete rehabilitation programs elsewhere before they can be accepted into this program.The supervisors held a meeting immediately after and approved 3-0, the conditional use application.Those conditions are:• they limit the guests sleeping over to 13 clients• limit animals to four• nobody can stay there who has substance abuse problems, they must receive treatment before coming there• one staff person who is responsible must be there 24 hours a day• must contact the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to secure signs for safe crossing of Route 534• must have smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors and every 30 days conduct a fire drill and have a written policy in place• have to work with SEO in regards to any sewage issues and keep an open space for an alternate system if needed• the township waived site plan (accepted a Google Earth map plan of the property as a site plan)• have to maintain 15 parking places and may not have more than 15 vehicles at one time• in regards to the accessory buildings, they must follow the UCC uniformed construction code and zoning code for any accessory buildings• must follow proper procedure for signs• discussion was held in regards for drop-offs of clothing donations; they must determine with roadmaster a safe place for these drop-offsThe conditions mentioned in the hearing were then approved, 3-0, at the supervisors' meeting held after the hearing. They will not be finalized until a written decision from the township solicitor, James Faerie, is signed by both the supervisors and the applicant. Then they can apply for permits.The clinic will be named Paul Syverson Veteran Sanctuary at the community opening on Oct. 1.
