Annual banquet will be held next Saturday

The Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame banquet will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall. Cocktail hour will begin at 5 p.m., Dinner at 6 p.m., the Induction Ceremonies at 7:15 p.m. and entertainment will follow beginning at 8:30p.m.

Tickets for the induction ceremonies and the entire evening can be obtained by calling Craig Zurn at 570-325-3855/3631, Ron Sheehan at 570-325-4244, Wilmer Redline at 570-325-3073 or Jack Kmetz at 570-325-4923.Following are the 2014 inductees:Craig ZurnCraig Zurn lettered for four years in football and four years in baseball and served as Senior Class Treasurer and a member of the National Honor Society in 2007. During his high school football career, Zurn rushed for 2,007 yards, passed for 1,659 and had 678 receiving yards. He had 43 touchdowns (19 rushing, 16 passing, 2 receiving, a 92 yard kickoff return, 3 punt returns and 2 interceptions). In his senior year of 2006, the team finished with an 8-3 record and, won the Anthracite 8 Football Championship and qualified for the District 11 playoffs. Zurn also was the only player in Jim Thorpe history to have the honor of playing in the Pennsylvania East/West football game.Ed JordanEd Jordan graduated from Jim Thorpe High School in 1966. During his senior year, Jordan became the first Jim Thorpe football player to lead the Carbon County Area in scoring with 102 points.He achieved that total playing in an eight-game season in 1965 while most of the other Carbon County teams were playing 10 games. He rushed for 16 touchdowns and six extra points. He rushed for a total of 789 yards during the season with his best games coming against Marian (150 yards rushing and three TDs), Pleasant Valley (116 yards rushing and two TDs), Pocono Mountain (114 yards and three TDs), Tri-Valley (122 yards and three TDs) and Northwestern (139 yards and three TDs). Jordan became only the sixth player in Carbon County history to score over 100 points in a season and the only player to ever score over 100 points in an eight-game season.Ben FlizackBen Flizack excelled in three sports during n All-Star career that ended in 2007. He received four letters in tennis where he was a two-time captain and went undefeated in doubles in 2006 and 2007. Flizack earned two letters in basketball, and another in football. Flizack was so impressive in his lone year of football as a senior, that he received scholarship offers from Holy Cross, The University of Buffalo and Lehigh University. As a member of the Jim Thorpe tennis team from 2004-2007, Flizack led the 2005/2006 team to the District 11 semifinals. Flizack was also captain of the basketball team his senior year, as they qualified for district playoffs.2007 football teamThe 2007 Jim Thorpe Area Olympian Football team, led by longe-time successful coach Mark Rosenberger finished with a 9-3 record that included winning the 2007 Anthracite League Championship. The 2007 Olympian team was the first in Jim Thorpe history, dating back to the inception of football in 1955 to win a District 11 football game. The offense of the 2007 team scored over 21 points in 10 of 12 games; and its defense held opponents to just 9.5 points per game during the season.
