Drainage work underway

More road work will be taking place along Park Avenue in Nesquehoning in the near future.

Currently, work on a drainage project on Park Avenue between Route 54 and Fourth Avenue is being finished. The installation of new drainage is expected to be done next week.Mike Tirpak of Carbon Engineering said that he looked at the cross pipes going under Park Avenue that drain into the creek on the north side of the road. Seven cross pipes were blocked and deteriorated and should be replaced. Of those seven, six were in the current project area.Councilman Don DeMarco said he spoke with Mike Radocha and got an estimate for the work, which would include replacing the pipes at a cost of $5,340.Board members agreed that the replacement might as well happen before the road is paved.Council voted to move forward with the replacement project. In other street matters, DeMarco said that street sweeping in the borough is underway. The street sweeper, which was rented for the project at a cost of approximately $3,400 a week, will begin in Hauto and the Hauto Valley Estates and work its way into the borough.DeMarco said that the town will post one side of the street at a time and will place orange signs up the day before that street is to be cleaned. For example, the borough will post no parking on the south side of Catawissa Street, the length of the town, for one day. The north side of Catawissa will then be posted the next day.DeMarco said that the no parking, when posted, will be enforced by police, and if someone doesn't move their vehicle, they will be fined and their car towed."The taxpayers didn't pay all this money for this street sweeper just so someone doesn't move their car," he said. "It has to be done and it's going to be done right."Councilwoman Mary Fox also reported that one of the sewer projects for this year includes replacing a sewer pipe along Railroad, from the tunnel near Kattner Coal and Oil to the parking lot of Kovatch.Borough Council also voted to put its street sweeper, which is currently in need of repairs, up for sale.
