Palmerton approves turf feasibility study

A site feasibility study for a potential multipurpose turf field has been given the green light in the Palmerton Area School District.

By a 6-3 vote, the school board on Tuesday approved Barry Isett & Associates to complete the study for the proposed multipurpose field located at the current football field and track site.Among those in favor of the study were directors Clarence Myers, Sherry Haas, Josann Harry, Charles Gildner, Joshua Smale and board President Tammy Recker. Opposed were directors Darlene Yeakel, Barry Scherer and Susan Debski. The study is expected to cost $10,000, and will provide a full proposal for the construction of the new multipurpose field, complete with budget and financial estimates.Resident Terri Roselli expressed her thoughts to the board."I agree we would all love to see a turf field (all-weather field)," Roselli said. "Unfortunately, we don't have the funds to do it."Resident George Ashman said he concurred with Roselli's sentiment. It was noted by the board that the study will be paid from the district's construction fund, and not the general fund.Earlier this month, Myers recommended that the district set aside $1.5 million and engage Isett about the potential all-weather football field and all-weather track.Myers said at that time the field would be for all sports, not just football. Also at that time, Scherer asked whether the board should have the district's engineer provide an estimate on improving the east end of the junior high school.Several years ago, the district purchased several homes along Fireline Road and tore them down, with the intent to put in a softball field and a soccer practice field.Scherer said there is an engineer drawing that could be given to the engineer to use as an aid to see what had been drawn up and proposed for that site.
