Palmerton flag retirement program held

It was out with the old, and in with the new, during a Flag Retirement Ceremony in Palmerton.

The Palmerton United Veterans Organization, in association with Palmerton Boy Scout Troop 41, held the event Saturday in the borough park.Ed Moyer, Commander, American Legion Post 269 of Palmerton, welcomed the scant crowd in attendance, and said the ceremony was a dignified disposal of unserviceable flags."I'd like to thank everybody for coming out today," Moyer said. "[The purpose of the ceremony] is the respectful retirement of worn out colors of our flag."The flags - which had served over markers for graves, or were displayed at various public places and worn or tattered - were presented and inspected by officers of the legion. Those flags that were unfit for use were then properly disposed of.
