Palmerton area residents with flags that are unfit for use still have time to dispose of them.

The banners must be dropped off before a Flag Retirement Ceremony that will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the borough park bandshell.

The Palmerton United Veterans Organization will conduct the ceremony. Any flags that need to be retired may be taken to a drop-off box at the Country Harvest Family Market in Palmerton, according to Ed Moyer, commander, American Legion Post 269.

Moyer said the flags may also be dropped off at the bandshell during the actual ceremony, and those who do may even dispose of their family flag themselves.

"We call it a dignified disposal of unserviceable flags," he said.

"Usually what we do is we have a procedure where the officers of the legion present the flags, inspect the flags, and see what purpose they served," Moyer said. "If they served over markers for graves, or some were displayed at various public places and are worn or tattered, they should be removed in the proper manner."
