Techniques of horizontal drilling and high-volume hydrofracturing for unconventional shale gas have been used since the late 1990s. These techniques are revolutionizing the energy landscape of the future.The development of the Marcellus shale in the country is a case example of a resource that is now economic to develop. The number of unconventional Marcellus shale wells in Pennsylvania has increased from eight in 2005 to more than 6,000 today. However, this rapid development has been accompanied by environmental issues that have contributed to a worldwide anti-fracking movement.The presenter is Dr. Susan Brantley, Penn State University, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
