Northern Lehigh School District has gained 31 extra special education students this school year.

On the flip side of the coin, Superintendent Michael Michaels informed the school board that the district's third day enrollment numbers were down.

"Our average third day enrollment is really dropping quickly," Michaels said. "However, [the number of] our special ed [students] are growing."

With regard to its third day student enrollment, the total number of students was at 1,677. The total enrollment for the 2012-13 school year was 1,710.

Also as part of his report, Michaels recognized recent retiree Sharon Williams, who retired from the district this past June after 32 years of service.

Michaels said he has enjoyed and respected dealing with Williams, who began with the district in 1981 as a librarian teacher.

"She was an excellent teacher who met the needs of our students," Michaels said. "She is a lovely lady who would always bring a smile to my face."

Board President Edward Hartman expressed thanks to Williams, at which point he then presented her with a gift on behalf of the board as a token of its appreciation.

In turn, Williams graciously accepted the gift, and thanked the board for the kind gesture.
