School play

The play, One in a Million, will take place at Pleasant Valley Middle School at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7, as a dress rehearsal to which Senior Citizens are invited, for free. Light refreshments will be served.

The play is being performed by the PV Drama Club, under the direction of Rollene Gougher, a PVMS math teacher.

Lions Club

Western Pocono Lions Club members continued the club's tradition of taking seniors out for a ride in the countryside to see the fall foliage this past Saturday. Those seniors came from four personal care homes: Brookmont, Mrs. Bushes, Getz's and Westlian.

Drivers included Charles Rush, Tom Kresge, Sharon Sweeney, Jeff and Linda Hinton, Donald Gower, Fred Klein, Dave Rowan, Barbara Konawalek and Rick Zimmerman.

The event was coordinated by Christopher J. Sweeney Sr., past state Lions council chairman, who has been organizing it for 35 years. In that time about 1,500 guests have been taken to see the fall leaves.

The monthly dinner meeting for the Lions will take place at The Old Mill Pizza on Route 209 in Sciota, Wednesday. Gathering time is at 6:30 p.m.; the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Lindsay Vaughn, dietitian from ShopRite, who will talk about cooking for one or two.

Apprise appointments

The Monroe County Area Agency on Aging APPRISE program will have free plan comparisons for Medicare beneficiaries. The days for comparisons will be Mondays and Tuesdays, starting Tuesday, Oct. 15 and ending Tuesday, Dec. 3. Hours available for appointments are 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Monroe County Loder Building at 62 Analomink St., East Stroudsburg.

Limited appointments will also be taken at Kinsley's ShopRite Community Room, Brodheadsville on Thursday, Oct. 17, and Thursday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Zion Seniors

The Senior Citizens Group at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville, for those 50 years and older, will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday. Each one should bring a sandwich. Beverages are provided.

Monroe Seniors

This county-supported group also meets at Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville. They begin gathering at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays for a social time, some special programs and for lunch. Those planning to eat there should contact site manager Doris Phillips a few days ahead of time. She can be reached at 570-992-6988.

Garden of Giving

On Saturday there will be both garlic planting and tours of the farm at the Garden of Giving in McMichaels, Saylorsburg. Everyone is welcome to visit the garden and/or help plant garlic to be harvested next year.

Lioness party

Western Pocono Lioness will meet Oct. 22, at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert. Social hour is at 6 p.m. and the business meeting starts at 7 p.m. This is the club's Halloween Party so members are asked to dress in costume and to bring refreshments, especially chocolate, and appropriate games to play.

PVEN needs

The report is that shelves at the PVEN Community Service Center are relatively empty. Everything is needed, but especially the basic necessities: soup, peanut butter, cereal, canned vegetables and tuna fish. Gift cards to ShopRite or Weis are also welcome.

AARP Course

An four-hour refresher course for the AARP Driver Safety Class will take place at the Chestnuthill Park Building, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.

Those attending must have proof that they took the eight-hour class within the past three years and must be registered.

Story time at library

Western Pocono Community Library, Brodheadsville, has Story Time at four different times each week: Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.; Wednesday, 1 p.m.; Thursday, 6:30 p.m.; and Friday 1 p.m., for children with special needs. For more information call the library at 717-992-7934.

Pet parade

The West End Park & Open Space Commission and Ross Township will host the Second Annual Pet Costume Parade at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, at the VanBuskirk/Haney Park, Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg. Owners and pets can be in the parade.

Prizes will be given for such categories as: Scariest, Cutest and Owner-look-alike and more.

Trick or Treat

Trick or Treat in the Chestnuthill Park will be from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 31.

Groups, businesses and families are welcome to participate and make this a SAFE place for kids to enjoy the holiday.

Grab your candy and decorations. Trim a window at the park building, decorate the gazebo or trunk of your car and scare up some business and have fun.
