Four plead guiltyto DUI charges

Four defendants in pending driving under the influence cases entered guilty pleas on Tuesday in Carbon County court.

President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II accepted the pleas from the following:Rodney Allen Rider, 40, of Jim Thorpe, was arrested on May 26 by state police at Lehighton along SR209 in Towamensing Township.Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance. He also pleaded to driving under suspension-DUI related. He faces mandatory minimum jail terms of 90 days on each count.Nanovic deferred sentencing so Rider could apply for placement in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program.Jamie Michael Smith, 40, of Walnutport, was arrested on Aug. 12 along Blakeslee Blvd., by Lehighton police. Given a test, the result was .18BAC.A first offense, he was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment.Stephen Edwin Thompson, 50, of Lehighton, was arrested on March 31 by state police at Lehighton, along Railway Street, in Weissport. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.Nanovic sentenced him to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension, and get a D&A evaluation.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on Nov. 29.Robert Thomas Ritter, 40, of Blakeslee, was arrested on July 23 along SR209 in Towamensing Township by state police at Lehighton. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.Nanovic sentenced him to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation, and render 30 hours of community service.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on Nov. 22.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs, which average close to $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
