Four bids were opened by the Schuylkill County commissioners for upgrading the Coaldale Fire Company's heating system at their work session held Wednesday afternoon at the courthouse in Pottsville. Bids were also opened for other projects.

Bidders for the Coaldale project were Rosenberger Plumbing and Heating Inc., Pottsville: base bid, $44,000, alternate bid WH-1, $2,200, and alternate bid, UH-1, $7,100. Sommer Inc., Schuylkill Haven: base bid, $67,975; alternate WH-1, $4,536, and alternate bid UH-1, $23,858. Bognet Inc., Hazleton: base bid, $56,489; alternate WH-1, $12,345, and alternate bid UH-1, $3,400. Reilly Mechanical, Branchdale: $83,220; alternate WH-1, $3,875, and alternate bid UH-1, $12,500.

Gary Bender, director of the county's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, said the costs will be covered from the grant the county receives from the state.

Coaldale is not eligible to apply to the state's CDBG for funds, but must compete with other municipalities for grants from the county. Bender said the funds will be used at the firehouse to convert the heating system from oil to coal because the fire company has been offered the coal free of charge by a donor.
