On-ramps to Interstate 81 in Kline Township were closed for five hours, and northbound traffic limited to one lane for seven hours, as firefighters and Hazmat crews responded to a chemical spill that stretched about a quarter mile of the interstate.

Firefighters on scene stated that a tractor trailer carrying a large electric transformer struck a barrier around 5:30 p.m. yesterday while exiting the northbound on-ramp at mile marker 139.2.The chemical spill stretched to mile marker 139.5.Responders determined the chemical to be mineral oil from one of the transformer's large radiator fins. Due to its slick nature, state police and firefighters opted to shut down the northbound on-ramps and limit northbound traffic to one lane until crews could clean up the spill.Responding were state police, EMA, DEP and Hazmat teams from Schuylkill and Hazle townships, fire companies from McAdoo, Tresckow, and Hazle Township, and Rush Township Fire Police.Northbound traffic was eventually opened to two lanes at 1 a.m. today.
