Mauch Chunk Trust Company (MCT) has made a donation to the Shepherd House food pantry.
In a check presentation at their main office on North Street in Jim Thorpe, MCT Branch Manager Sharon Cimono presented Shepherd House Executive Director Stanley Haupt with a donation of $500 to aid their efforts to feed the needy.
In thanking MCT for their donation, Haupt said, "This bank is very community-minded and this is their way of helping."
According to Haupt, more than 21 million children participate in a free or reduced price school meal program during the regular school year, but don't have such a convenience during the summer months.
During the last six months (December 2012 through May 2013) the pantry served a total of 6,416 households that is broken been down to : 9,195 adults; 4,822 children; and 2,533 elderly for a total of 16,550 persons served 153,036 meals.
This is all possible because of state government grant money (which has been greatly reduced) and donations from the Carbon County United Way.
However, this does not cover the total budget as the rest of the budget is covered by donations.
"The state government grant money is gone now and we are depending on funds from our general account until future grant money is received," Haupt said.
The Shepherd House food pantry accepts monetary donations and food donations, canned goods, etc., all of which can be dropped off at a local pantry.
