Diving gear needs

Lehighton Fire Chief Gary Frable said the fire department's diving team has been utilized this year more than ever.

The squad has responded to at least five drowning incidents and numerous water rescues.A member of Lehighton Borough Council is concerned because there are members on that dive team who don't have gear.Councilman John Kreitz said he doesn't feel the dive team should have to purchase all its gear and and would like to see if the borough can help the squad become better equipped.No action was taken on his suggestion.The dive team has responded and participated in the recovery of drowning victims in the Lehigh River in Lehighton, the Glen Onoko area of Jim Thorpe, and Beltzville Lake.Frable said the dive team is a valuable part of the fire department and even has its own vehicle - an old rescue truck that was put into service.In other business:• The council approved a resolution honoring the late Ralph D. Hunsicker for his "many years of distinguished service" on the Lehighton Water Authority. An assistant treasurer for nine years and secretary for seven years for the authority, he died this past March. The resolution was suggested to the council by water authority member Carlos Teets.• The council will advertise for bids for a new garbage contract.• Councilman John Bird said that Power and Light Department Superintendent Lonnie Armbruster inquired about adding an additional bay to the department's substation."I feel we should pursue it but check to see what it will cost," said councilman Scott Rehrig. No formal action was taken.
