Coplay ousts Northern Valley

Coplay used a four-run fifth inning to spoil Northern Valley's plans in the third round of the Lehigh Valley Legion playoffs at Northwestern High School on Friday.

Mother Nature didn't do a lot to help either. The hosts held a two-run lead and looked like they had Coplay right where they wanted, but the one big inning and what turned out to be a very big insurance run in the top of the sixth hurt.Northern Valley rallied, but fell a run short as Coplay held on for a 5-4 win with the game called after six innings because of darkness."I kind of look back and think maybe I should have done things differently," said Northern Valley manager Brad Rauch, who was ejected for arguing a call with the base umpire after the top of the fifth. "You've got to play the game out-for-out. You've got to be confident in your decisions. You can't make a decision and have any setbacks and say, well I shouldn't have done that."I'd do it the same tomorrow if the same scenario came about. They got us today and they're a good team."Northern Valley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Josh Kern drew a lead-off walk, went to second on a wild pitch, was sacrificed to third by Tom Quigley and scored on a fielder's choice by Travis Nelmes. It added another run in the third inning for a two-run lead when Kris Seiler was hit by a pitch, stoled second and scored on a single by Cody Hallman.Dominic Sinatore had the big blow in the fifth when he hit a bases loaded triple down the right field line to clear the bases. Jonathan Benitz led off with a walk and scored earlier on a single.Coplay added an insurance run in the top of the sixth and it eventually needed it. With one out, Vincent Cuvo walked, stoled second, moved to third on a wild pitch and took home when a throw trying to pick him off went in to left field.Northern Valley didn't quit, however, and plated two runs in the bottom of the inning. It also had the tying run on third base when the game ended.Pinch-hitter Matt Williams led off the sixth with a triple and Ryan Trexler walked and stoled second. Both scored on a base hit by Travis Nelmes.Coplay relief pitcher Daniel Lloyd chalked up two strikeouts to end the game."It's just the way the cards fell today and I hate to see it over for these guys, but we'll come back next year," Rauch said. "They have a goal set already tonight so we'll be ready for next year."Coplay 000 041 - 5 3 3Northern Vy. 011 002 - 4 4 3Continenza, Yost (4), Lloyd (6) and Cuvo; Hallman, Hofford (6) and C.
