Slatington plans 150th anniversary

The 150th anniversary celebration for Slatington will begin with a kickoff on Aug. 24 of this year, and end with a parade on Aug. 16, 2014. A meeting was held recently to finalize plans for the two events.

The kickoff will be at the Seventh Street Park near the covered bridge over Trout Creek. Charter certificates will be handed out at the event for those who participated in the fundraising and become charter members.Printed items were discussed, including T-shirts and slates bearing the logo. Double-size slates with the logo on one half and plain slates were discussed. Theywould be framed with wood as the original school slates were.Music will include Danny Phillips, who wrote a "Slatington" song, the Hobo band, a possible alumni band and the Northern Lehigh school band.Susie Grammes, the last shopping queen who was the most famous person in Slatington, and Sally Ann Rex, a soap box derby racer who might still have her car, will be invited.Old cars, one for each year since 1964 or one from each decade, may be available.The parade will go from South Street to the trail head.Candyce Merkle said the history committee is choosing a printer for a 200-plus page, hardcover book which may also come out on DVD. There will be a maximum of 500 printed. Presales of the limited-edition book will be taken at the kickoff.Restoration of the mill race at Trucker's mill is under consideration. It could be a Boy Scout project.A 1964 complete costume made with material and time donated by a sewing company has been provided. It will be displayed on a mannequin in the library window.A collection of memorabilia from both the 1964 centennial and 1989 125th anniversary is a possibility for a one day or one weekend display at the Vigilant Fire Company. In addition, people could write their family history and display it with two or three photos.A book by Charles Rowlands is at the printer. He went from house to house gathering information.The committee said it is seeking a volunteer to serve as publicity chairperson.The draft of the kickoff program should be ready for the meeting on July 15 at 7 p.m. at the Vigilant Fire Company.
