State police at Frackville reported on two crashes probed by troopers.

A one-vehicle accident occurred about 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, along SR924 (Ringtown Boulevard), in West Mahanoy Township. Troopers said Thomas M Stauffer, 23, of Ringtown, was driving a 2001 Hyundai Elantra northbound when he fell asleep while negotiating a left curve. The car traveled northeast out of the northbound lane where the undercarriage made impact with the guide rail. The car then went airborne off a dirt embankment.

The front end of the car made impact with a tree and came to rest against several trees on its passenger side on a steep embankment.

Troopers said Stauffer, who sustained a minor injury, then fled the scene and never reported the crash. Troopers cited Stauffer for careless driving, driving on roadways laned for traffic, failure to report a accident to police, and a seat belt violation.

The second crash occurred about 12:33 p.m. on Sunday, July 7, along Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township. Troopers said Patric S. Jones, 21, of Newport, N.C., was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu northbound in the left lane when he fell asleep. The car traveled north off the road and onto the grass median. The driver's side front struck a traffic sign, spun counter-clockwise, and came to rest facing west in the median.

Jones was not injured. Troopers were assisted at the scene by volunteers from the West End Rescue Sqard, Mahanoy City, and the Ryan Township ambulance.

Troopers cited Jones for careless driving.
